Raising Awareness • Removing Obstacles • Restoring Relationships

Why We Exist

The world is in the throes the worst refugee crisis since World War II with almost 15 million people classified as refugees by the United Nations Higher Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). Half of the world’s refugees are children and the average length of exile is 17 years.

In 2014, 42,500 people fled their homes each day. This is approximately one-fifth of the population of the city of Mobile, Alabama. Therefore, within one week, the entire city would have been gone and with it, homes, businesses, and economic productivity. In addition, this happened each week of 2014.

Melissa Fleming, Head of Communications for the UNHCR, warns of the consequences of ignoring this crisis, saying, “How we treat the uprooted shapes the future of our world.” Further, Jesus tells us that how we treat the marginalized reflects our view and treatment of him, “As you did it to one of the least of these, you did it to me.”

Our Mission & Vision

Mission: Providing opportunities for refugees to thrive by raising awareness, removing obstacles, and restoring relationships.

Vision: Dwell Mobile envisions our city as a place where refugees find their home.

History

Dwell Mobile was established in 2015. In 2010, Jeri Stroade began working with refugees in Mobile, Alabama through All Nations Community Church (ANCC). As Jeri met and listened to refugees, they continually identified the same need: relationships. They told stories of leaving family and lacking any support network as they tried to establish a life in Mobile. From this time of observation, learning and listening, Jeri started looking to provide opportunities for Mobilians to build relationships with refugees. While a culture of caring for refugees was established at ANCC from this work, it also became evident that the refugee community’s needs were broader than one church could handle. In 2015, Jeri established Dwell Mobile both to equip refugees to assimilate to America and to mobilize Mobilians to care for refugees.
